Pelvic Pain / Endometriosis Treatment

Endometriosis Surgeries

Dr. Vahora is highly trained in innovative approaches to relieving her patients from pelvic pain/endometriosis. Having studied pelvic surgery during her fellowship at Celebration Health, Dr. Vahora’s wide range of experience allows her to offer patients many treatment options for their condition—surgery isn’t recommended unless absolutely necessary.

Pelvic pain can occur from a variety of causes, such as endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, or vulvar/vaginal atrophy. Dr. Vahora sees many patients who experience painful intimacy associated with pelvic pain/endometriosis. Through her wide scope of treatment options—such as laparoscopy, which allows her to visualize the entire abdomen and pelvis without making a large incision on the patient’s abdomen, or noninvasive, conservative options—Dr. Vahora relieves patients of pain quickly and effectively.

Dr. Vahora specializes in painful conditions that are often difficult to treat, and she will see patients who come from far and wide to receive her renowned care. In addition to surgical expertise, Dr. Vahora offers noninvasive and physical therapy tools for relief. She individualizes treatment plans for each patient, offering medical options, including compound therapy, when appropriate.

If you’re experiencing pelvic pain or signs of endometriosis, call Dr. Vahora’s office for an endometriosis surgery consultation.

When it comes to pelvic pain, endometriosis is at the top of the list. To put it simply, it’s a burden for 6 to 10% of women, affecting everything from performing ordinary daily tasks to the overall quality of life. It’s one of the most common gynecologic issues occurring in women in their reproductive years, between 15 and 44. When it occurs in women in their 30s and 40s, becoming pregnant becomes difficult.

This painful condition has a tremendous effect on the lives of those diagnosed with it. Endometriosis influences the overall quality of life and has a direct impact on emotional well-being, work, daily activities, and sexual relations.

What is endometriosis?

It happens when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside of the womb. The painful growths can swell and bleed, similar to the monthly menstrual cycle.  Technically speaking, it’s an inflammatory condition that is estrogen dependent, accompanied by extrauterine lesions that contain endometrial glands and stroma.

Endometriosis is most often found on the:

  • Fallopian tubes
  • Ovaries
  • Tissues holding the uterus in place
  • Outside the uterus

Endometriosis is not limited to the areas above. It can also grow in:

  • The vagina
  • Vulva
  • Bowel
  • Bladder
  • Rectum

As the growths expand, they are likely to cause other issues. They can block the fallopian tubes trapping blood in the ovaries and forming cysts. Scar tissue and adhesions are common, painful and make it very difficult to become pregnant. And, as if that all isn’t enough, it can cause problems in both the intestines and bladder.

Causes of Endometriosis

Often, it’s the result of a problem with the menstrual flow, genetics, immune system, hormones, or surgical procedures such as a Cesarean birth or a hysterectomy. During surgeries, endometrial tissues can be accidentally picked up and moved.

Prevention and Treatment of Endometriosis

Unfortunately, you can’t prevent endometriosis, but you can reduce the chance of developing it by decreasing the level of estrogen in the body. Studies show that exercising regularly (it lowers the amount of body fat which decreases the amount of estrogen), avoiding large amounts of alcohol (alcohol raises estrogen – limit to one drink per day), and limiting caffeine (coffee, soda and green tea can raise estrogen – limit to one drink per day) can help reduce the chances of developing endometriosis.  Even changing your birth control can reduce the symptoms.

Over the last few years, new oral medications have become available to help with the treatment.

Dr. Vahora is experienced in treating endometriosis. From customized medications and holistic treatments to laser treatment to surgery, she has the tools to not only ease the pain, but also treat the condition.
