Robotic Surgery

Dr. Parveen S. Vahora is a pioneer in the field of minimally invasive robotic surgeries, performing the first single-site hysterectomy procedure in North Pinellas County. This innovative surgery options involves only a small (about 2.5 centimeters) incision within the bellybutton, through which Dr. Vahora uses robotic arms to perform the procedure, leaving the patient with no visible scar.

Hysterectomy Procedure

Dr. Vahora is able to offer this minimally invasive option for many gynecologic surgical needs. Her training in robotic surgery allows her patients to enjoy smaller incisions, meaning less scarring, fewer medications, and much faster recoveries. Dr. Vahora calls the da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Hysterectomy “Not Your Grandmother’s Hysterectomy™,” because the difference is monumental for patients. What was once a major abdominal surgery is now minimally invasive.

Dr. Vahora’s special training in the da Vinci® Robotic System allows her to perform extremely complex surgeries with more precision, flexibility, and control than ever before. Dr. Vahora offers, in addition to the da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Hysterectomy, the da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Myomectomy and additional surgeries. Please see the other surgeries page for more information.

Understanding Robotic Surgery

The female reproductive system is complex. And when a problem develops, it affects your overall health and quality of life, and surgery may be the best solution. This is where a minimal invasive da Vinci® Robotic Surgery system can replace traditional open surgical procedures with great success. Dr. Vahora is a trained surgeon in the da Vinci system and offers this to her patients as an alternative to traditional open surgery. There are many benefits to robotic surgery.

How does it work?

There are three major components: the surgeon console, patient cart and vision cart. The surgeon begins by making one or more small (only 5 to 12 mm) incisions where the surgical instruments and camera will be inserted. The da Vinci system has four robotic arms that are “wristed” (controlled) by the surgeon. One arm has a hi-def 3D camera. Two arms act as the surgeon’s arms, replicating the surgeon’s hand movements, and the fourth arm holds back tissue as needed. The tiny instruments move in response to the surgeon’s actions who is sitting at the surgeon console controlling the instruments via a 3D close -up view.

The instruments to be used for the procedure are located on the patient cart located near the patient. Here’s where the cool sci-fi futuristic aspect enters – the instruments will move in real time based on the surgeon’s hand movements at the surgeon console! This action is made possible by the third component, the vision cart, which makes the communication of each component “talk” to the others and perform the actions.

Robotic surgery is very specialized and requires special training. Dr. Vahora is certified and experienced in the da Vinci Robotic Systems and performs complex surgeries with great success. As we mentioned earlier, there are some really impressive benefits from robotic surgery, including:

  • Less blood loss
  • Less pain
  • Less medication
  • Less scarring
  • Faster recovery
  • Quick return to normal activities

Robotic surgery may be just the solution to your gynecological issue. Let’s talk about it.
